Our Design Philosophy
Our everyday surroundings and the furniture around us has been proven to have an immediate effect on our wellbeing. At Woodi, we create the everyday lives in daycare centers for toddlers, pupils and teachers in schools and nursing home residents – among others. We design public spaces where people enjoy themselves and operate smoothly: eat, learn, sleep, talk – whatever it is that you do in life. That is why everyday life is the cornerstone of our design.
Simple and streamlined form language is beautiful and functional at the same time. Our design philosophy has been developed during decades of experience, with the same central idea present since the company’s starting years. Clear, straightforward design forms the basis of Woodi collection, together with seamlessly matching furniture that can be used to form modern, uniform spaces. At Woodi, we make furniture that can be used and enjoyed for as long as possible. In our furniture, we cherish natural forms and materials, safety and the well-being of wood, which we have found to be an approach that works.
Our design process is constantly supported by expertise in the requirements of daycare centers, schools and public spaces as well as care homes. Safety and carefree everyday use are the most important features of our furniture. Woodi furniture for public spaces creates environments where safety is not a concern.
As a furnisher of both children’s environments and workplaces, we also play our part in developing ergonomic environments. We want each of our products to be comfortable to use and to support healthy public spaces, promoting human well-being. Our collection includes a wide range of furniture. Therefore we can guarantee that our furniture range can be used to create varied environments ranging from standing workspaces to small groups and active workspaces, as well as for leisure time. Our product design emphasizes the natural postures of the human body and the activity-maintaining properties of the furniture: whether you work while standing, sitting, moving or swinging. We believe that safety and healthiness of the use environment go hand in hand, and each of our products has been designed with this in mind.
Our product development is a continuous process that includes taking each and every feedback into account, as it was given! In order for our furniture to last both time and use and look good, we have created features and details for our furniture that not only please the eye, but also support safe and healthy everyday environments and versatile uses. “One product – more than one use” has been the leading thought behind several of our furniture. We manufacture our products at our factory in Kuopio, where our wood professionals ensure the quality of our products, and our product development team takes care of integrating customer needs into our future collections. Also our classic products have been developed based on customer needs. These include the Otto line of storage furniture and children’s high chair.
Otto since 1999
The Otto storage unit represents design in the Woodi style. The characteristic box design is timeless and works well in all its simplicity. Choose size, color, and number of boxes! Perhaps you would like to have it with doors, or without. The storage unit consists of compartments and can be tailored to all kinds of spaces and needs, including the back material: choose open shelves, add doors to the frame or equip with popular drawers!
The characteristic and modular design still have their place in the collection, since Otto’s are still manufactured today at our factory in Kuopio.

Trendsetter in Kindergarten Chairs
Also in the case of the Otto chairs, the cornerstone is the design process, which was carried out together with daycare centers and educational professionals. The design of the product was based on a real need, while taking safety and ergonomics into account. We wanted to create a chair that is lasting in its purpose and serves its users optimally among other furniture in the daycare center. The high Otto chair has been designed taking into account well-being at work and the ergonomics of the staff. The secret is its height, which allows children and adults to sit on the same level. The Otto chair adapts to the pace of the child’s growth; the safety arc can be removed when the child is able to climb on the chair without help. Finally, a high chair without armrests will serve well, until the need to sit on a “big people’s” chair arises.
Since then, high chairs have been more widely adopted for daycare centers, and this successful product has established itself in place of children’s low chairs – completely, in fact. Nowadays, high chairs are the only type delivered to daycare centers, and later the story of the high chairs has also been represented by the well-known Children’s High Onni Chair.
